A Social Investment

Forth Sector – a Social Investment

Put simply, social investment is investing in something which improves the planet and lives of the people and animals that inhabit it. It assumes society to be the structures and relationships that bind us together in common purpose for the benefit of all. Investment can be in money, resources, expertise or time.

Social investment invariably brings financial returns as well. For example, UK Government estimates put the cost of keeping someone unemployed and on benefits costs the state more than £100,000 a year. However, the cost of something is not its value. The value of being in meaningful employment to the individual is immeasurable; it can mean the difference between poverty or comfort, exclusion or inclusion, despair or hope. The benefit to society as a whole is obvious.

Increasingly the ‘system’ seems to know the cost of everything and the value of nothing; this is not the kind of society we want to see.  Our mission is to do what we can to increase social capital by supporting those people excluded from employment towards and into meaningful jobs. We do this in a tangible, practical way by providing training for work, work experience and jobs for people facing what sometimes seem to be insurmountable barriers to employment.

With help from people like the Big Lottery, Social Investment Scotland, Unity Trust Bank, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and many others, we have built an enterprise and employment centre at Duddingston Yards. Our partners have invested because they recognise the social return their investment will yield – life transitions for people excluded from employment.

This is our simple prospectus; invest in us, give or lend us money, resources, your expertise or time and we will use your investment wisely to help people and improve the society we share.
